The Cool Kids Roll Into T. Dot
The Cool Kids.jpg Toronto's Lee's Palace is packed on this late summer evening. On stage are tonight's headliners, Antoine Reed and Evan Ingersoll, dressed simply in jeans, golf shirt and sweater attire. The duo, better known as The Cool Kids, is the only thing the 500 or so hip-hop heads in the place have on their mind. Everyone is having a good time.

With a laidback approach to performing -- which mirrors their simple, floss-less raps -- The Cool Kids manage to captivate their audience, having fans hanging on their every word, while they barely break a sweat. Reeds and Ingersoll make it look easy, cultivating all of the energy in the building through their voices. The vibe is indicative of lines like "So much game, that I could put it in the bottle..." which they confidently claim on the fun "A Little Bit Cooler". And it's even more fun live in concert.

As the night goes on, the crowd bursts into unanimous screams at age-old party lines like, "If you ain't got no money, take yo broke ass home," and "If you ugly, keep your hands by your side." Then when The Cool Kids segue into "Bringing 88 Back", the crowd breaks into smurfin', woppin' and swinging imaginary baseball bats. A glimpse of local Toronto rapper Blake Carrington behind the stage curtain busting out the dance moves is symbolic of the night.

Towards 11:30 p.m. it's time for The Cool Kids to start winding down. But not without kicking the concert into full blast first with a call and repeat of "We Will Rock You", followed by a self-made drum roll from Reed (a.k.a. Mikey Rocks) leading into the final song of the evening: "Black Mags". The accompanying hype girl and video slideshow add momentum to the hit single while the bass in everyone's system brings the house down.

Before Mikey and Chuck (Ingersoll) saunter off stage they ask the audience if they've had a good time. The response is a healthy dose of, "Hell yeah."
